Putin-like Obama photo

Does this remind anyone of the widely shon photo of jacked Vladimir Putin?

Not suggesting one is like the other, just interested in the propaganda technique of depicting leadership figures in this fashion.

Phone hanging @ 57th & 57th uptown NRQW platform

50% of payphones I walk by look like this. It could be that there is a legitimate need to make cell phones 100% ubiquitous, so that even the poorest person has one, prepaid or not, to be able to hook into the grid, & ask for help at the drop of a dime.

Christmas Lights at Penn Station

The order is, Halloween....CHRISTMAS.

I'm actually ok w/ leaving Thanksgiving out of this equation. Perhaps that's what keeps it, for me at least, a relatively low key celebration of family and friends.

barber shop club?

This place is right next to Manhattan Theatre Source, and on late nights there's oft a crowd lining up for what I can only guess is a club.

Under the barber shop.

Hipster PDA, after going through the washer and dryer.

43rd & 5th: chase Bank, 2nd floor

The look of the lights in that ceiling remind me of the "Batcave" in The Dark Knight.

Though w/ this camera's resolution, it's a starfield.

When did this happen? And this lane could seriously not be put to better use easing traffic?

Dalai Lama at 54th street & Third Avenue

Illustrating the tremendous difference between thinking that something is a great cause, and actually doing something to further, that cause.

Tree branch

I heard a crackling above me, & this fell to the ground 2 feet to my left. Not terribly dangerous, but probably would've stung a little.

Using IE for its Icon for a Web Application

I'm not sure if this qualifies as a bona fide tip (since it's actually only 50% towards an actual solution to the problem). That said, one problem I've been having with the GMail/Firefox Remember the Milk extension is that it does not always load when I arrive at my inbox. I'm sure that there's a solution out there somewhere, but again, this is about laziness.

I could, of course, run RTM from its website in my browser, but I like to think of it as a separate "application" from regular browsing, and want to zip to it via ALT-TAB. Plus my taskbar goes vertically along the left-hand side of my screen, so tiny bits of text description won't help.

As a "solution," I've started using a different browser for RTM. So while all my main web stuff is going on in Firefox, I have RTM in Internet Explorer, and the blue "e" icon in my task bar translates to my brain as "tasks," and the Firefox icon translates to my brain as "internet."

I know TWiT or Macbreak Weekly have suggested applications that will replace the browser icon with something particular to what you're using it for. But again, this is about laziness, and to that end, it'll work for me.

Does having 5 lights running at the same time make it that much more effective a message than if they just used 1?

Sleep Number

At first, I thought the LCD's on the headboards was an odd design choice.

Then I saw this sign about sleep numbers.

From a sidewalk window shopper point of view, this was not clarifying.

Gutenberg the Musical

Whenever I see an ad for this, I find myself hoping that it has something to do with Police Academy.

Subway Steps at 30th Avenue

Somehow there is something very satisfying in running up these steps and clomping your feet on the newly installed plating on the landing.

Union Square Uptown N-Train. R160.

Wondering if this is somehow in reference to the new R160 trains on the N/W line, but can't imagine what purpose it would serve.

Bought a new PDA.

I saw this in the toy section at Rite-Aid, and simply could not not buy it.

I am also reminded of my friend Demetri's observation that there will soon be a generation that will have no recognition of what a Palm Pilot is, as that function has largely moved on to smartphones.

So I guess a kid receiving this would appreciate the opportunity to doodle, but would lack the cultural references to know that he should be making-believe that he's scheduling appointments and recording contact info with it.

Also at Bryant Park.

Reflected Light from Bank of America Tower (better picture)

Bryant Park, Reflected Light off of Bank of America tower

Not much to see in the photo, but as I was walking by, I noticed that it seems to reflect sunlight into a slight lavender color. Kinda neat.

Steampunk Computer, as found in Wikipedia

I always enjoying seeing this sort of design, and I just realized via Wikipedia that there's a name/association with it, as part of the 'Steampunk' genre. Which I can't say that I've ever read. But it certainly looks neat.

Yogurt w/ Fruit on Bottom

As if working for it makes it more worth while.
